Delhi police files caveat against Sharma in SC

The Delhi police on Tuesday filed a caveat in the Supreme Court to pre-empt R K Sharma, suspended senior Haryana police official and prime accused in the murder of Indian Express correspondent Shivani Bhatnagar, from obtaining any ex-parte anticipatory bail order.

The crime branch filed the caveat following Sharma's failure to surrender even after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Delhi high court on September 9.

The short caveat read: "Let nothing be done in the above-mentioned matter without notice to the undersigned counsel for respondent caveator." Counsel D S Mehra filed the caveat.

The high court had rejected Sharma's anticipatory bail plea on the ground that the prosecution had collected sufficient prima facie evidence against him. It said that Sharma's conduct after the issuance of arrest warrants by the trial court on August 7 showed that he was trying to abscond from the investigation.

A city court had allowed the police to initiate proceedings to proclaim Sharma an offender in the case and attach his property. The police on its part attached Sharma's movable assets and his flat in Musoorie.

Three co-accused --- Shri Bhagwan, Pradeep, and Satya Prakash --- have already been arrested and are now in judicial custody.

The police on Monday announced a reward of Rs 20,000 for information on the fourth accused, Ved Prakash alias Kalu, who has been evading arrest.
