Transport strike to isolate Manipur

Manipur will be cut off from the rest of the country from Wednesday after a local transport committee decided to suspend bus services on the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway 53 following an assault on three passengers by militants on Tuesday.

NH-53 is currently the only road link between Manipur and the rest of the country because of the indefinite blockade of the Imphal-Dimapur NH-39 by the United Committee of Manipur since September 7. The UCM has blocked the road demanding deployment of adequate security forces along the highways.

Official sources said heavily armed ultras stopped an Imphal-bound bus at Nungba on NH-53, about 100km from Imphal, on Monday, dragged three of the passengers to a nearby shop, and beat them up severely before setting them free after seven hours.

Recounting his experience before reporters, one of the passengers said the gunmen identified themselves as cadres of the banned National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah).

The decision to stop running vehicles on NH-53 was taken at a meeting of the Joint Action Committee of Tourist and Inter-State Bus Services Association following the assault, a JAC spokesman told reporters on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a six-member UCM team headed by its president, Sapamcha Jadumani, left for New Delhi to join an all-party delegation from the state to discuss the highway problem with the Centre.
