Vajpayee says his government will crush terrorism

V Mohan Narayan in Male (The Maldives)

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said on Tuesday night that all necessary steps were being taken to flush the terrorists out of Gandhinagar's Swaminarayan Temple complex and asserted that his government was strong enough to tackle the scourge of terrorism.

"We will deal with terrorism with a firm hand. Government is strong to tackle the scourge and it has the people's trust and faith," Vajpayee told the Indian community at a reception hosted by S M Gavai, India's high commissioner for the Maldives.

Vajpayee, who was on a four-day visit to the Maldives, said he had spoken on the telephone to Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and Gujarat Governor Sunder Singh Bhandari on the terrorist attack.

Advani, he said, would be flying to Gandhinagar on Tuesday night itself. The prime minister himself decided to cut short his visit to the Maldives and return to India on Wednesday evening a few hours ahead of schedule.
