Centre asks Karnataka to release
water to TN

After a meeting with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Water Resources Minister Arjun Charan Sethi urged Karnataka "to honour the decision of the CRA as agreed to by them [Karnataka and Tamil Nadu]".

Following suicide by a farmer, Karnataka had on Thursday stopped the release of water to Tamil Nadu.

Sethi had met the prime minister to apprise him of the tense situation prevailing in the Cauvery river basin with regard to the implementation of the CRA order.

The minister appealed to both the states to exercise restraint when many parts of the country were facing one of the worst droughts in recent years.

Both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were undoubtedly facing acute distress on account of the prevailing drought, he said.
