Another accident on Eastern Railway averted

The Eastern Railway on Thursday averted what could have been a major accident, when an alert railway porter detected three fish-plates missing on the track on the Grand Chord section in Dhanbad division, minutes before the Bhubaneshwar-New Delhi Neelachal Express was to pass.

The Grand Chord section of the Eastern Railway was the one on which the Howrah-Delhi Rajdhani Express met with a major accident on the night of September 9. That accident too is being blamed by railway officials on missing fish-plates, though a formal inquiry into the cause is on.

B Sahu, the porter, was on his way to serve a written memo to a stationary goods train, since the starter signal was defective, when he discovered the missing fish-plates and immediately informed the duty manager of Chichaki station on the Gomoh-Gaya Grand Chord section, near Dhanbad.

Railway staff and personnel of the Railway Protection Force inspected the tracks and replaced the missing fish-plates. Train services resumed after 0240 IST.

Six long-distance trains, including the Kalka Mail and the 3009 Doon Express were detained for nearly 90 minutes each because of the incident.
