Joining the issue with Eric, I agree, that Indians do deserve what they got. We certainly asked for the kind of treatment that we get in US airports right now. And why do we deserve it?? Simply because, after all the humiliation that we have suffered in the hands of the americans, through the decades, a significant number still flocks there, to make it rich. One more note to add would be that on the same count, America deserved 9/11 too. It would be funny if not tragic, that america specialises in creating its own villains and then running the extra mile to obliterate them from the face of the earth (in the second part of the job, it fails miserably). Saddam was America's own creation, just as the Osama is. and to date, America has not succeeded in getting rid of them. Noriega, Pinochet, Zia ul haque, and now musharraf and the dozens of leaders that the 'Democratic ' america has dumped on the heads of a subservient world have all contributed equally to making life hell for americans worldwide. One would expect that America and Americans learn from the stupidity of their past and behave more responsibly. However what America and Americans have been demonstrating is the classic example of a dog kicked in its seat. They now bite every hand that comes to their aid, whether friend or foe. With friends like the Wahabi Saudis and Pakistan, who needs enemies, Uncle Sam??? Point to ponder???

Subject: Your Money, Our Brains

That was below the belt. If this guy Eric feels that Indians deserve such crap from American authorities because we are a poor lot, living in dingy households and cramped dirty cities, with and unstable economy, then the world does not deserve people like him. All Americans, for that matter Europeans too, can think of is the colour of the skin. Its like saying the Americans deserved the 9/11. There are problems everywhere in the world including the US and the Europe. They have been able to deal with it because they have the monetary power to do so. Even then they are not the perfect of societies. Far from it. they have been polluting the environment, using people and nations. The US got independence centuries before we did. Yet for quite some time it was the wild west of bandits and robbers. even now they are a bunch of fools led by an incompetent president. Yet do we say they deserved 9/11. No! the problems that we face are a result of degrading moral values of humans. I hope Americans still believe they are humans! and as far as the technology and the economy is concerned, your Silicon Valley and the free market has more people from the sub-continent. You have the money , we have the brains. More Asians died in 9/11 than Americans. And yet they talk of Brownies and Blacks.

Subject: Look at Russia

Americans should understand that it will not take much time to come down. Look at Russia. What it was sometime back? Now Russia is incapable of feeding itself. The headwieght that the Americans(or for that matter anybody) shows will definitely bring them down. The more high they thing they are the more deep they shall fall. This is not my wish thou. The response of one Eric is thoroughly disgusting. I think this guy will treat his father/ mother the same way also if they don't have money. We can see that Bush is a stupid Hypocrite and from the words of Eric it looks like he is also one.

Subject: Can He Tie His Own Laces?

I am not surprised at all that this fool "Eric" has expressed his small minded sentiments. Just tells me how single minded people like him are in finding fault with the world while ignoring the problems & failures of their own society. First of all he talks about corruption, is the US any less corrupt or messy? Look at the events in the past year! Everyone from the US president down has been involved in some kind of corporate fraud. Lawlessness is just as alive in the US. As for us "browns" deserving this treatment, we dont need a sanctimonious, self opinionated, self congratulating white clown to tell us what kind of treatment we deserve. What we dont need is an idiot like him whose only questionable achievement in life is that he has learnt to tie his own shoe laces. What observations is he talking about making in India? I have been to the US and I was not impressed with the life style, the absolute lack of any family or social fabric. I was not impressed with the fact that people are rude, unhelpful, have no desire to look outside their life or care for anyone. I was not impressed with the fact that the only thing that drives the entire society is money and everything else is held below that. This is a country driven by the individual desires & greed of every single person. No one cares for anyone & even less for the world at large. Racism is alive & thriving. The rich are getting richer by conveniently abusing the system and there is a pretence to hold them accountable. What exactly is this country rich in? If he was so horrified by the lifestyle that an average Indian leads, well he should sit in own country and not travel there again. Let his mind remain closed and stay where you are to continue living in a fantasy world that his country is paradise. The kind of sentiments that are expressed in this persons note, should remind us that in we are on our own as a people, as a country and we need to have pride in ourselves and our country so that no one "ever" again takes advantage of us or puts us down or harms the country in any way. We are Indians and always will be. No one will ever respect us until we strong, both economically & militarily and stand up to the world and we show the world how we have pride in our nation, of who we are!!

Subject: Logical and rational

Eric, you come from a country that claims being logical and rational ... Your comments that "we poor brownies deserve it because we are impoverished ..." does not still explain why our country's journalists should be treated so shabbily ... where is the rationale here ? Where is the connection between being impoverished and being a security threat to a nation of your size ??? Going by your rationale that you treat other Asian countries like South Korea, Japan in big esteem ... you seem to have conciously missed a few more Asian countries which your govt. and people hold (or held ??) in great esteem ... Saudi Arabia, Afganistan (remember when the Soviet's were there ) Pakistan ... and the whole in the Gulf region ... There are enough number of Indians in India and abroad who lead international lifestyles ... only thing is that it is never bragged about ... IMFs Worldbanks and UNDP are happy with SK and Japan since they can arm twist the puppet govts of these countries ... When you cant get your way (as in India) you write incriminating reports ... it is only another form of corruption ... just like your Anderson and Enron ... Also whenever you want you can destroy the economies of your nominee companies ... like what happened in SK and Japan, Singapore et al minus India ... a few years ago . It is true you may have seen shocking sights in India when you were here ... even we have seen shocking sights (like shootings in your teen schools and shopping malls) in developed countries caused by it's own people ...and when the size of the shocking incident is large you put the blame on people outside your country ... Common Eric dont cry for excuses ... Anyways ways why go into all these arguments ... your third word said it all ...You Poor Browns deserve ...And you have shown which flock you belong to ...

Subject: The Core Cause

Thanks a lot Eric for asking God to bless India.. We need it...Having friends like the mighty US of A I guess enemies are not needed. I read with deep interest the horrible condition of Indians. I guess Eric need not have travelled this far your neighbouring banana republics with inflation rates in four figures are even better. As far as living conditions are concerned I guess the US natives could speak better. Yes any one would agree India having lawlessness, corruption and what not but do not ignore the real cause behind it. India has to maintain a huge army for neighbours which are supported by yours truly nation. And why only India I guess major problems of the World stem from the arrogant, appeasing and self centred US attitude. 'Either you are with us or you are against us'guess that describes the attitude simply. Physician heal thyself. Write from the days of PL32 or PL42 to the F16 and 19s it is your nation that has actually labeled Indians as brown and has been shamlessly involved in not allowing Indians deserve there full potential. Look at countries like Cuba, Iraq that have suffered more than India due to your attitude before clicking the keyboard again.

Subject: Look Within

So a lot of "foul play" and "discrimination" and "racism" cries have been heard with respect to the article that appeared about how indian journalists are singled out for treatment. Though the arguments and responses given by Eric are misplaced to a large extent, there are some underlying points he/she made that are worth noticing. I do not think the US authorities are against "indians" or "browns" as such. They are against anyone who is likely to cause them harm. Statistically speaking, the chances are higher that people belonging to a particular region or religion are most likely to cause harm to US personnel and interests. Now coincidently, it so happens that we, Indians share a lot in common in terms of physical appearance and language etc with such ethnic/religious groups. And it is no secret how as a by product of our corrupt system, anyone can obtain any kind of document. May it be a pass to the parliament, or to high security areas of the airport, vital installations etc. And of course, a journalist pass!. Given the credibility of our issuing authorities and our system, it really should not come as a surprise that a nation who is under the dual grip of economic downturn and terrorist paranoia, react in the manner they do. We really have to improve our system, appear credible in the eyes of the World before we can go about accusing others of racism, etc. "Charging someone with Racism" is a very powerful accusation. Please let us first eradicate racism from within our nation, then demand fairness on the world stage.

I really don't know why are we so much obssessed with a stupid country like America. They don't deserve any respect. What is there in the country of whites (ie US)? Another Eric erred. And Rediff published that. Any Tom, Dick and Eric can utter anything because he is a bloody White (that too from states). Such a shame!! OK! We are poor. OK! We are sick of all politics and many other things. OK! We live in utterly unhygienic conditions. OK! The filth of corruption has reached nose height. OK! We have low living standards. But probably Americans have only that thing better than us. Who the hell they are? See other stats for that matter. * There are about 10 divorce per 1000 marriages in US. * American Administration haven't sorted out the problems of child violence in their states. (forget of catching Mullah Omar and Bin Ladin). * There are more number of senior citizens who live alone compared to any other country. * As far as corruption is concerned it is universal, only figures and stats change; Remember Olympic scandal, watergate, worldcom or andersons ? How many more you need ? As far as an Indian staying in US is concerned, he/she has done wonderfully well there. And probably as good as any other asian man or woman would have done. FYI, 25 percent of all small hotels and motels in America are owned by Indian-Americans. And Indians have heavily contributed to the world of computers and software in US. The recent findings from the Census Bureau (US), it is observed that: Indians in the United States are quite a success story. They are contributing on a level few other ethnic communities have reached. They not only are educated but educating. They work hard, believe in family values, are committed to their children's future, and are making significant contributions economically as well. So no more junk is needed from any Eric (at least on Rediff). And if any Eric wants to puke, let him first make sure that his backyard is clean.

Subject: Lest We forget

I thought that WTC did bring some of that yankee pride down and make them understand that they also after all are humans made of blood and flesh. But unfortunately people like Eric who deserved to be in that rubble along with the rest of the ilk of his type instead of the innocent people who persihed, still roam around freely and abuse the right to free speech and whenever they open their mouth only filth and bile flows through, and it is very sad to note that Rediff also sides with these subhumans. It also seems that Eric conveniently forgets that a great nation takes time to build , the US itself was no great shakes in 50 years from its independence , it also faced the same problems like poverty, unemployment, lack of infrastruture etc. , and does he forget that it was these very developed countries whose dubious economic policies and hidden political agenda is responsible for the strife , poverty and failures as witnessed in modern world. Or does Eric forget that the present USA itself is standing tall on the shoulders of the browns, hispanics and blacks , if these various communities were to think on line of race and color then USA today probabely would had been more like an African nation than a Super power. And his logic of linking development to treatment of journalists has no human logic at all , seems that Eric thinks that u should behave with a person depending upon how well developed the concerned nation of the person's is ? That makes him perfectly eligible to be chucked out of human society and sent to live with apes in US zoo so that the children there can come and take a look at a living mentally retarded ape mistakenly classified as a human with physical characteristics of a human, whom the apes can impart a few lessons in civility and manners. This is a reply to the letter from Mr. Eric, who has not ventured to make his own nationality known. Maybe he is either afraid of some 'third world power' or is so proud of the deeds of his own country (if he belongs to any, that is) that is ashamed of taking its name in public. A sentence reads thus from the mail "You people should remember that Indians always represent an impoverished third world country to international community." - Mr. Eric (and this is also addressed to all other Mr. Toms, Mr. Dicks and Mr. Harrys who are sympathizers with your viewpoint) - since u have made an address as 'you people' and 'Indians' - I am answering as an Indian. Firstly - in your culture poverty may be something to be ashamed of, Indian culture begs to differ. Second - you people (yah I am using your phrase) find money as the be-all and end-all of everything. So your country and countries like yours do not hesitate to 'develop' themselves at the cost of selling arms to their neighbours, training their kids with guns, setting fires to their homes and selling drugs to them (isn't the list too short!). Indians do not - mind you - inspite of their poverty, they do not! Of course India has poverty, of course people are struggling - but where on Earth is poverty not there? US, UK - you want to say all you bloody white-skinned animals are not 'fighting' for survival? Wake up Mr. Eric (and Mr. T-D-H-etc). Look around you - and you'd find lots to learn from India. India represents a country that does not depend on any other country for its survival or development. We are doing it ourselves and we know we'd do it. So what 50 years are over? Mr Eric, I guess, you should go to your backyard, or you should go to the railway stations in your country to find about you. If you consider indians as corupt, what will you say about americans (Enron, etc)?? They are much bigger cheats. Also Mr. Eric, please check the reality under the prosperous America. Mr.Eric's response show's a classic example about why the west is so arrogant and ignorant about the east. He should be reminded that worser conditions prevail in Latin American countries ,Mexico and some African countries, He should also be remided about the various developments we have achieved,especially in technology.That is the reason why so many of the major Software firm (like Microsoft ,GE,Oracle and many more ) set up their centre's in India.I am sure without proper infrastructure & the manpower they would never be interested in India.

Hello my dear fellow human being, Thx for calling us browns and 'justifying' the indecent treatment of Indian journalists in a perversely intelligent manner. Your mail is nothing but a harsh racist template. Korea and Japan - agreed - are asian economical powers when they hardly have defending abilities. With all their financial might they still look upto US for their defense and under USA's shadow they are happy and so is USA since they are its 'puppet' countries. But when countries like china ( have to refer here inspite of all the contempt I nurture for the atrocious wars they inflicted on India) and India, overcoming all the vagaries of their states and civil sector, build up a decent defense, and do not speak what USA wants them to speak, they become 'pale' and 'dark' countries respectively. How naive ?! Does the world go dark when the cat sleeps ? Why dont you admit that u like wealthy countries which wag the tails according to USA's nod and not those states which have some self respect left inspite of monetary backwardness ? Basic Human Dignity is independent of a person's racial, ethnic, religious or economic background. There is no point in being critical of America simply because it has tightened security measures since the past one year. USA has been a country that has allowed millions of foreigners (including our own Indians) to settle and prosper in its land. Subject: Remember Rome

The only reason we are getting such bad treatment is because we are not organized. Today, in this bad economy what will happen to American software companies if we pull out all the Indian software professionals working here. All the software companies will close there offices here and go to india. As such the big ones are alredy doing that. We may not have achieved as much as the other developed countries have but no one can tell where we will be in next 50 years and where US will be in next 50 years. If us continues to be arrogant like this they will end up making more enemies than friends. You can not belittle 1/4th population of the world when most of that population is running ur call centers and computers! We do have problems, but we have achieved a lot also in the last 50 years, we have just entered the globalization phase and already we have establieshed our strength in software and call centers. We are a very hardworking nation, but we have problems, population, corruption, lack of resources, but we have the biggest pool of educated labor and if we can get our house in order in time, the day when US people will start pouring into india for jobs will not be far. Even Rome fell, the greatest empires of all! US is not completely invulnerable either. Especially, when morons like Eric do not realize the importance of immigrants in US and thing "he" made this country so great. 90% of the US population do not even know anything except outside theit personal lifes, they have a miserable narrow look at the world. It's the immigrants that come here, work hard and bring new ideas and properity to this country and it is interest of us, short term and long term to value our hard work. Eric, I am not sure what industry you work for, but if u r in software and if u r working with Indians and there was never a chance when u had to go upto and ask and indian some question about something, I would be very surprised. This is a global economy and our time will come. We may have made mistakes in the past but we are a nation, a great nation in the making. Long live India! and US!

Well, what Eric says is one hundred percent true... India is still an under-developed country in 50 years after getting independent and is bogged down by corrupt politicians, poor infrastructure and poor standard of living. Well that's the reason India belongs to the league of third world nations - India knows that, US knows that and the whole world is aware of that. Well America is great and Eric as a first world citizen should be proud of his citizenship... but.. when you know that brown skinned people are third world citizens and they do not deserve a place in the white house, why the hell did your honorable President invite the Prime Minister of a filthy third world country to his nation and to his esteemed residence ? Why did the Consulate of the great nation issue Visas to brown skinned journalists ? Afghanistan is poor, India is poor, Pakistan is a ditch, Palestine is a land of beggars, Somalia is undernourished ... Of course America is still the greatest nation on Earth and full of wise people such as Eric and his honorable President. So why don't the wise people realize that when they throw a stone in to the gutter the filthy water splashes back on to their suit or their tuxedo and their white skinned body ? Why mess around with third world nations ? Well, the white skins have empty space inside their skulls and that shows up in their foreign policy. The 9/11 attacks, Osama Bin Laden etcetera are those splashes of water from the gutter on their faces ( the white skinned faces ). Indians contributed a lot to the pathetic state they are currently in. We are bogged down by religion, bogged down by caste, bogged down by language, bogged down by Sex. As long as we continue to give due importance to differences in Caste, religion and language, there will only be LK Advanis, Ashok Singhals, Bal Thackereys, Narendra Modis and their brethren in Indian Politics. Our politicians want to come to power by trick or crook and as long as they find a bank of votes in the name of religion and poverty, they will continue to use that as their weapon to gather votes. India has a huge population of educated middle class which is slowly shifting it's base to greener pastures among white skinned people like Eric. Only a single digit percentage of middle class goes to the polling booth. The day when the middle class starts going to the polling booth, there will be a revolution in Indian Politics. I am sure, religion based politics and caste based politics will not hold good with the middle class. The educated middle class has to rise up as a vote bank and let's hope it happens some day. Let's look back at ourselves ... all those who write comments on rediff for this article and those who read this article on rediff ... I am sure half of us have never been to a polling booth ( myself included ). The day we go out there to vote, we will see things improving.

Please tell that Eric chap that we know what we deserve, it is not by chance that , an average American is duffer of the first order and needs , intellectuals from all over the world to run his country, and as far as 911 is concerned , every American should be ashamed of what they did in Japan in 1940s and yet not a single fool of theirs ever repented for it . And Iraq , and Korea , South America, where ever , they have gone , they have only created misery, we Indians have never attacked anybody , and as far as poverty is concerned please check out the conditions that were in America, in 1850s they were fighting stupid civil war, as far as development is concerned , they did not have voting rights for women as late as 1950s and slavery is indeed , the greatest slap on their nation for ever . they produced and grew rich by only exploitation. And what amazes me the most that how can a deficiency of melanin , a known case of human cause of cancer and other diseases be a credit as claimed all these so called whites of the world, theirs is culture only 400 years old , while we have seen richness worth many many time more than what they would ever see . So Eric, you better apolozise to entire nation of ours for writing such, and you better don't come to India , we don't need you .

This shows the arrogant attitude of the US. They think they are the masters of the world. Soon they will be brought to the ground. What they reaped in 9/11/2001 is what they sowed in the past. And for that are sowing now, they will reap even more worse probably there wont be a country called US to realise their mistakes even. If not countries like US, UK, and other so called developed western countries, there will be absolute peace in the world and especially India will live in prosperity and peace. For all the problems faced by India, these UK & US and other western countries are more responsible. They have looted India in the past and now diplomatically & politically. After having created the Al-qaeda & supported the pakistani terrorists diplomatically behind the screens they doesnt have any moral rights to talk about terrorism in the world. First of all they doesnt even know the exact meaning of terrorism. Even the mail of Eric is a classic example of their arrogant attitude. Look at the way he addressed Indian people. That shows their racial discrimination attitude. If not the Indians, the americans cannot boast themselves of their technological advance in any of their fields. It is the Indians' brains behind all their acheivements. So the western people better think wise before commenting on Indian country and its citizens. I was reading Eric's comments and was astonished as to how they could be printed. They are racial to say the least and bring the core reason why Americans are hated the world over. The world would be a much better place if ppl like Eric came over their myopic view of development which their country promises them based on exploitations abroad. To rebuttle his stupid claims of India's developments it is only 50 years to India's independence and we have come a long way. A lot is still to be achieved, but a lot has been. Get over your color dude, or else the world is soon gonna be sans white.

Subject: What's New?

Eric, What you say is true and everybody knows that. Yes we did get independence in 1947 and since then we have brought down our population growth rate to 1.2% (and not by practising forced abortions), our literacy stands at more than 40% and we have managed to keep together most diverse of religions and people and worked as a country. Did you know that Indian muslims are world's largest population of muslims in the world to have experienced 54 years of uninterrupted democracy? I am not even going to complain about how much weatlth British looted. We have our problems and we'll sort it out. Being poor shoudn't invite racist attacks.

Subject: Wrong Conclusion

The facts are "factual". So there is no debating them. However, the conclusion is flawed & reinforces the popular belief all over the world that Americans (except a selected lot) are ignorant & arrogant. (on a call to Amex for change of address, the operator in Dallas did not believe that New York could be both a City & a State !) The simplest of common sense & logic shows that the result of the "mis-governance" of a country does not imply that its citizens do not have the same right to equality, respect and fairness as any other person on this planet ! (Eric would be hauled up in US if he wantws to do this "poor browns" onto the less privileged citizens living in downright pathetic conditions in US - yes there many there as well of different races & nationalities!) Why am I wasting time responding to such flawed thinking ? Because I agree with the facts in the article. But not the conclusion.
