Kabini: Police opens fire to disperse protesting farmers

Sadananda R in Chamarajanagar

Several farmers were injured when police opened fire on Sunday to quell thousands of agitated farmers, who attempted to lay siege to the Kabini dam from where the Karnataka government is releasing water to Tamil Nadu to honour Cauvery River Authority's order.

The trouble arose when policemen tried to stop the farmers from reaching the dam. The provoked farmers retaliated by pelting stones at the police, who initially reacted with lathicharge and lobbing teargas shells. But when that did not stop the rampaging farmer, the cops fired in the air leading to a stampede in which at least two farmers were seriously hurt.

The farmers had assembled at Kabini from the districts of Chamarajanagar, Mandya and Mysore.

On Monday, the farmers are holding a meeting in Mandya to chart out the future course of action.
