Tamil Nadu to move Supreme Court on Cauvery issue

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said that her government will approach the Supreme Court against the Cauvery River Authority's 'consensus' decision asking Karnataka to release 9000 cusecs of water as against the 1.25 tmc feet of water demanded by Tamil Nadu and granted by the Supreme Court.

Clarifying that her state was not a party to the 'consensus' arrived at the CRA meeting in New Delhi on Sunday, Jaya said, "Tamil Nadu is shocked and aghast at this arbitrary treatment meted out to the state. Once again we have no other way but to approach the Supreme Court."

The CRA asked Karnataka to release 9000 cusecs for Tamil Nadu as a via media between the 1.25 tmc feet demanded by Tamil Nadu, and the 8000 cusecs offered by Karnataka.

Reiterating that the Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had 'pre-decided' on Tamil Nadu's case, Jayalalithaa said that Vajpayee had come prepared with his statement directing Karnataka to release 9000 cusecs even before the commencement of deliberations at the CRA meeting.

Earlier, Jayalalithaa had issued a statement, pointing out how she had been given less than 24 hours' notice to participate in the CRA meeting. As she was indisposed, Jayalalitha said, she could not attend the meeting. Hence, she deputed state Finance Minister C Ponnaiyan, who was already in Delhi on other work, to represent her at what was essentially a meeting of chief ministers, she added.
