STF to intensify operations
against Veerappan

Sadananda R in Nal Road (Chamarajnagar district)

A day after Veerappan managed to escape their dragnet, Karnataka Director General of Police V V Bhaskar on Sunday announced that operations against the sandalwood smuggler would be intensified further.

Addressing a press conference at Nal Road near Ramapura, he said, "We have two objectives in the present operations. The first and foremost objective is to ensure the safe release of H Nagappa. The second is to nab the gang."

Addressing the concerns of Nagappa's family and his supporters, the DG appealed to them to 'kindly bear with us'.

Coming down heavily on the people who have extended support to Veerappan, Bhaskar asked them to stop doing so warning them of severe consequences.

The DGP did not take any questions, but the 15-minute press meet itself was a revelation as since the time of its inception, the STF has always kept a safe distance from the media.

Meanwhile, three helicopters have been requisitioned for aerial surveillance of the forest area.
