Emissaries to appeal to Veerappan on AIR

Fakir Chand in Bangalore

With Veerappan, the abductor of Janata Dal leader H Nagappa, serving an ultimatum to the Karnataka government through a second audiocassette, efforts are underway to make the two emissaries that he has named for negotiations communicate with him through radio.

The government is making arrangements to record the messages of Tamil extremist leader P Nedumaran and his associate Kollathur Mani for airing them from All India Radio stations in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Nedumaran -- arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act -- is lodged in a jail in Tamil Nadu, while Mani -- accused of aiding Veerappan -- is cooling his heels in a Karnataka prison.

The two had played a crucial role when Veerappan had abducted Kannada matinee idol Rajakumar.

Both are detained under non-bailable warrants.

Intelligence sources told rediff.com in Bangalore that the government has directed state Security Adviser T Srinivasulu to send a team to Bellary to record Mani's message.

Through the Tamil Nadu government, Karnataka is also trying to get a recording of Nedumaran's message.

It may be recalled that the state government had made Mani send a message to Veerappan on Tuesday, September 3, through AIR for the immediate release of Nagappa.

Mani told Veerappan in Tamil that he should set the hostage free on humanitarian grounds, as the health of his family was of concern to everyone.

He also told the bandit that whatever his demands and grievances, they could all be sorted out through negotiations with the government.
