Veerappan wants Kolluthur Mani
to be sent as emissary

Sadananda R in Chamarajnagar and Fakir Chand in Bangalore

There appears to be a development in the latest hostage crisis with Veerappan demanding that the Karnataka government send Kolluthur Mani as an emissary to secure H Nagappa's release.

Kolluthur Mani is in Bellary jail on charges of colluding with Veerappan in Kannada actor Rajakumar's abduction. He is known to be sympathiser of the brigand.

"I have received a message from the STF that a second audio cassette has landed in Kamagere," Karnataka Home Minister Mallikarjun Kharge told mediapersons in Bangalore.

The cassette reached Nagappa's residence in Kamagere (Chamarajnagar district) by post on Thursday afternoon, family members said adding they handed it over to the STF.

Karnataka Director General of Police V V Bhaskar, who is camping at the STF's Gundal base camp, is expected to reach Bangalore on Friday.

Sources in the STF said that among other things, Veerappan has demanded Mani's immediate release.

The abducted ex-minister has also requested the government to consider Veerappan's demands sympathetically, they added.

In its bid to establish contact with the outlaw, the state government had directed its STF to go slow in its combing operations in the forests on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border.

It has installed about 50 boxes at various places in the forest areas for the locals to drop tips on Veerappan's movements.
