attack in Kupwara district

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Five workers of the ruling National Conference (NC) were seriously injured in a militant attack at Shanu village in Langate constituency (Kupwara district) on Wednesday afternoon.

Militants fired bullets at their vehicle, which was part of the motorcade of Rajya Sabha MP and NC candidate from Langate Sharief-ud-din Shariq, police said.

Shariq escaped unhurt, they added.

Security forces rushed to the spot and searched the area for the culprits. No one has yet admitted responsibility for the attack.

On Monday, a NC worker had been wounded in a militant attack near Tangmarg on the motorcade the state Industries Minister Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, who is the younger brother of Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah.

All candidates for the assembly polls have been provided with heavy security.
