First Talwar class warship to be delivered in December 2002

India's first hi-tech Talwar class warship being built at Saint Petersberg in Russia would be delivered to the Indian Navy by December 2002, Navy Chief Admiral Madhavendra Singh said on Wednesday.

"There is a slight delay in delivery of the warship as it has to be fitted with the latest state-of-the-art equipment. The trials, however, have already been conducted in the Gulf of Finland," he said at a seminar on Human Resource in Ex-defence Personnel in Mumbai,

Two more warships of the Talwar class series would be delivered next year, he added.

He said three state-of-art destroyers are being built in Mazagaon Docks in Mumbai, as part of Project 15 A

He also said the first warship of Project 17, called 'Radar Evading Warship', would be launched in the first quarter of 2003. It would be inducted into the Indian Navy by 2006.

Admiral Singh said the license for the production of the French submarine Scorpene at the Mazgoan Dock was 'in an advanced stage of approval'.

Following the recent approval by the Centre to the 30-year submarine building programme, Singh expressed the hope that the Indian Navy's proposal for a 15-year ship building programme would be positively considered by the Centre.

He said the Indian Navy would conduct a joint exercise with the Singapore Navy 'shortly'. Joint exercises were recently held with the United States and the French navies.
