Pondicherry demands Cauvery water from TN

Pondicherry Chief Minister N Rengaswamy on Tuesday led a delegation of parties, excluding the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, to New Delhi to meet Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and demand the Union Territory's share of Cauvery waters.

Advani, who holds the home portfolio, is the overall in-charge of the Union Territorial administration.

The delegation told him that Tamil Nadu had not released the 4.1 tmcft [thousand million cubic feet] of water due to the Karaikal region in the distress season between June and October, according to reports.

Citing the interim order of the Cauvery Dispute Tribunal, by which Tamil Nadu swears, the delegation said out of the 205 tmcft released by Karnataka each year, Pondicherry was supposed to get 6 tmcft.

Both Karnataka and Pondicherry have Congress governments, while the AIADMK is in power in Tamil Nadu.

Last week, when the Union Territory Assembly discussed the issue, Rengaswamy said he had written to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa over the issue.

Karaikal is an enclave of Pondicherry inside Tamil Nadu, and abutting the Bay of Bengal, near Nagapattinam.
