Krishna convenes emergency Cabinet meeting on Sunday

Fakir Chand in Bangalore

Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna has convened an emergency Cabinet meeting on Sunday to discuss Thursday's Supreme Court order to the state to release 'some water' to Tamil Nadu.

The meeting, to be held after two days of uncertainty, is also expected to discuss the fallout of the Supreme Court's strictures against the state government in the contempt case filed by Tamil Nadu against Karnataka for not releasing Cauvery waters to Mettur reservoir.

The Supreme Court will give its final order on the contempt case on Monday, October 28.

"The chief minister is returning to Bangalore on Saturday night along with state Water Resources Minister H K Patil to assess the situation and review the law and order position in the state," sources said.

They said the Cabinet might also deliberate on what the government would do in case the court directs it to release some water while pronouncing its orders on Monday.

Krishna has also convened an all-party meeting on Sunday, after the Cabinet meeting, to brief the opposition leaders on the contempt case and consult them on the options the state government is weighing to resolve the Cauvery crisis.

Though the main opposition parties such as the Janata Dal-United and the Bharatiya Janata Party have been officially informed about the all-party meeting, it is learnt that both the parties are in no mood to attend the meeting.

After the last such meeting on October 6, the opposition parties blasted Krishna for unilaterally deciding to go on a weeklong padayatra.

In fact, the state unit of the BJP is planning to hold a parallel meeting at the same time to discuss the state government's failure to defend its stand in the Supreme Court.
