Kolathur Mani gets bail in
one case, four more to go

Sadananda R in Chamarajanagar

Judge T Najappa of the sessions court in Mysore on Friday granted bail to Tamil nationalist activist Kolathur Mani, whom forest brigand Veerappan wants sent to his hideout to negotiate the release of hijacked Janata Dal leader and former minister H Nagappa.

With this, hopes for a quick resolution of the two-month-old abduction crisis have been revived.

But Mani, who is lodged in Bellary central jail, is still a long way away from freedom. He has been granted bail in just one of the five cases against him.

While he has applied for bail in another case before the same sessions court, two more cases are pending against him in the Karnataka high court and one in a lower court in Kollegal.

The sessions court in Mysore is scheduled to take up the second case against Mani on Saturday.

Relief was evident on the faces of Nagappa's family members as the news of Mani's bail reached them.

Parimala Nagappa, the wife of the abducted former minister, said she hoped this would hasten her husband's release from the brigand's hold.
