Karnataka Cabinet to consider Supreme Court order on Friday

Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna will hold an emergency Cabinet meeting on Friday to discuss Thursday's Supreme Court order to release 'some water' to Tamil Nadu.

The chief minister's office told rediff.com in Bangalore that Krishna would be returning from Delhi on Friday morning along with state Water Resources Minister H K Patil and state Law Minister D B Chandra Gowda.

According to reports from Delhi, where Krishna is holding discussions with Patil, Gowda, officials and legal counsels who represented the state in the case, Karnataka may release about 1000 cusecs of water daily from the Kabini reservoir from Friday so as to comply with the court order.

It is learnt that about 8000 cusecs of water is already flowing into Tamil Nadu from the Biligundlu gauging point on the inter-state border as a result of seepage and inflows from the catchment areas up to the Mettur reservoir in Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party demanded the resignation of Krishna.

Karnataka BJP unit president Basavaraj Sedam accused the state government of failing to represent its case in the Supreme Court properly.

"Not only he has failed to present its case properly, but also faced wrath of the court because of the padayatra," Sedam said.
