SC asks Karnataka to immediately
release 'some water'

The Supreme Court on Thursday held that Karnataka had prima facie committed contempt by "deliberate non-compliance" of its order on the Cauvery issue and directed it to release "some water" to Tamil Nadu immediately.

"We are prima facie of the view that a deliberate non-compliance of the order has taken place and it is contempt. What final orders as a result thereof we will decide on Tuesday," a three-judge bench of the court said while hearing a contempt petition filed by Tamil Nadu against Karnataka.

"We will direct, in the meantime, to release some water. We will record a finding that there has been a deliberate non-compliance of the order," said the bench, which comprised of Chief Justice B N Kirpal, Justice Y K Sabharwal and Justice Arijit Pasayat.

After the brief order, the court continued to hear arguments in the case with Karnataka counsel Anil Diwan making his presentation.
