TN intent on confrontation: Krishna

Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna, replying to the Supreme Court notice on Tamil Nadu's contempt petition, on Wednesday said the strategy of the Jayalalithaa government was to create an atmosphere of confrontation by demanding more Cauvery waters.

However, Krishna, replying to the October 4 order of the court ordering Karnataka to release 9,000 cusecs of water as per the Cauvery River Authority order, said, "At no point of time there has been any wilful disobedience on my part or on part of the state government of any order of the apex court."

Earlier, Tamil Nadu had filed a contempt petition against the Karnataka Government accusing it of not honouring the apex court directive of September 3.

Both contempt petitions are likely to come up for hearing before the court on Thursday.

The Karnataka government, however, has requested the court to postpone the hearing of the contempt petitions by two weeks by which time the rainfall from the northeast monsoon could be gauged.

Krishna said Tamil Nadu's confrontational attitude, which led to an agitation of Karnataka farmers and the death of one panchayat [village council] leader, had forced him to undertake the padayatra [foot march] to persuade the farmers to withdraw their agitation.

Tamil Nadu had taken a stand of non-cooperation at every stage and even attacked the bona fides of the CRA and its chairman Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he said.
