Mani's chances of getting bail bleak: Legal experts

Sadananda R in Chamarajanagar

Some legal experts say the chances of Tamil activist Kolathur Mani's release on bail are bleak.

Even if Mani manages to get a bail in the high court, according to them, one can file a Public Interest Litigation against the decision.

In fact the former director general of Karnataka Police, C Dinakar, is already prepared to move court in case Mani manages to obtain bail.

The government has also adopted a wait-and-watch approach. It has filed mild objections in the affidavit against Mani's bail application. The case in which Mani is charged with supplying arms and ammunition, and seeking bail, is slated to come up for hearing on October 28.

In another development, Special Public Prosecutor Nagaraj, who was representing the government in another case in Kollegal court involving Mani has resigned from the job without any reasons.

The government has announced Thimmappa as the public prosecutor.

Interestingly Mani's advocate Venugopal has also declined to represent him in the various cases. Reasons are not known for this. Venugopal has represented TADA detainees for a long time and was instrumental in many of them getting released.
