Tehelka temporarily stops operations due to financial crunch

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

News portal tehelka.com has temporarily stopped operations due to financial difficulties.

"We took a decision to suspend the updating of the news portal four days ago. The decision has been taken due to financial difficulties," the editor-in-chief of tehelka.com, Tarun Tejpal, told rediff.com on Tuesday.

Tehelka alleges that the government is targeting it for exposing corruption in defence deals through the much publicised Operation Westend.

"We have been telling mediapersons for the last one-and-a-half years that we are facing difficulties. But nobody seems to be listening to us. The only persons who are being paid salaries are the office boy and the drivers. Rest six of us who are working are doing so on honorary basis," he said.

Aniruddha Bahal, the investigating editor of the portal, said the suspension of operations is temporary and there is no intention of closing the site.

"If you go to site you will come across an announcement that due to financial and technical reasons we are not able to update the site for the time being. Nowhere have we said that we are closing it down," he told rediff.com

He said that the management did not have enough money to maintain the server.
