Karnataka Cabinet reviews Cauvery water storage position

The Karnataka Cabinet on Saturday night reviewed the water storage position in the Cauvery basin reservoirs, but took no decision on the issue of release of water to Tamil Nadu with which it is locked in a bitter legal battle.

Karnataka Information Minister Kagodu Thimappa said the water storage position will again be reviewed on October 22.

The Cabinet reviewed the situation 'in all its perspectives,' he said and maintained the state's position that it still faced water shortage.

He said the government had still not finalised the affidavit it has to file before the Supreme Court, which would take up the Cauvery waters case on October 24.

Karnataka suspended release of Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu after a farmer ended his life by jumping into the Kabini reservoir.

The Supreme Court and the Cauvery River Authority have asked the state to release 9,000 cusecs, but the Karnataka government has stuck to its guns that it is not in a position to comply with their directives.

Tamil Nadu has filed two contempt petitions against Chief Minister S M Krishna and others for refusing to release Cauvery waters.
