Ramadoss wants Krishna punished for not releasing Cauvery waters

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S Ramadoss on Friday called for punishing the Karnataka government for disobeying the Supreme Court's orders in the Cauvery waters case, and cautioned that any leniency in this case could have serious repercussions with other chief ministers adopting similar attitude.

Referring to other issues like the Ayodhya dispute pending before the court, he said, "There will be no democracy in the country if states refused to follow the law of the land."

Ramadoss, however, clarified that he was not in favour of dismissing the Karnataka government under Article 356 of the constitution.

He wanted Congress president Sonia Gandhi to pull up Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna for his refusal to release Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu.

Ramadoss said though Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's stand on the Cauvery row was legally sustainable, she had failed to carry the state's opposition parties with her, unlike Krishna.
