Pak to 'shortly' withdraw forces from Indian border

K J M Varma in Islamabad

Giving a 'positive response' to India's decision to pull back troops from the Indo-Pak border, Pakistan on Thursday said it would 'shortly' withdraw its forces to their 'peacetime locations'.

A Pakistani foreign ministry statement described the Indian move as a 'step in the right direction'.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by President Pervez Musharraf, it said.

India on Wednesday announced withdrawal of troops from the international border with Pakistan and its redeployment to peacetime locations. But India had ruled out any reduction of forces along the Line of Control. New Delhi also ruled out resumption of dialogue with Islamabad till it stopped cross-border terrorism.

The troops had been deployed for the last 10 months on the international border.
