Pakistani troops disrupt anti-infiltration operations in Indian territory

Josy Joseph in New Delhi

Pakistani troops opposite Poonch area had been firing on Indian Army posts throughout the day trying to extricate a group of terrorists who had been spotted by security forces after they had infiltrated into an Indian village early on Thursday morning.

Five of the terrorists have been killed and the encounter was on in Anganpathri village when this report was filed.

An army officer said it 'was not common' for Pakistani troops to fire upon Indian posts while the army was carrying out an operation within Indian territory.

"The infiltrators must have been very important people," the officer said.

Usually, Pakistani troops start firing to give cover to infiltrators, but don't keep track of the terrorists once they are inside Indian territory, he said.

According to information reaching Delhi, early this morning an Indian Army post noticed movement from across the Line of Control.

"Soldiers engaged the terrorists around 1130 IST. It was while the encounter was on that Pakistani troops from two posts - Ring Contour and Point 10120, across the LoC began firing on our posts," the officer said, adding, "by 1800 IST, five terrorists had been killed."

A preliminary investigation has revealed that the infiltrators belong to the Tehrek-e-Jihad, a splinter group of the Pakistan-based militant outfit Lashkar-e-Tayiba.
