Boats capsize near Ranchi,
20 feared drowned

At least 20 people were feared drowned when two boats capsized on Monday following a storm, in Getalsud reservoir, some 40 km east of Ranchi, in Jharkhand.

The boats were ferrying 30 to 35 passengers to Salhan village when they were caught in the storm near Rukka village and capsized, Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Jaishanker Tiwari told PTI.

The body of a four-year-old girl was fished out from the swirling waters, he said.

"Twenty people are feared drowned. Others may have swum to safety," Tiwari said.

As darkness descended, rescue operations were called off. "We have requisitioned navy divers from Rengali base in Orissa to search for survivors and retrieve bodies," Tiwari said.

The Getalsud reservoir is fed by waters of the river Subarnarekha.
