For the second time in a month, the Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna, his Water Resources Minister H K Patil
and the state's Chief Secretary A Ravindra on a contempt petition filed by Tamil Nadu accusing the state of "willfully" disobeying the court's October 4 order to release 9000 cusecs of Cauvery water.
A three-judge bench comprising Justice V N Khare, Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice S B Sinha, however, exempted the three from personal appearance "for the time being" while asking them to file their reply to the petition on or before October 22.
The bench posted the petition for hearing on October 24.
Quantifying the damage caused by non-release of Cauvery water by Karnataka at Rs 2,930 crore, Tamil Nadu government's counsel K K Venugopal said the entire Kuruvai crop has been destroyed and the Samba crops might meet the same fate.
