Veerappan wants Kolathur Mani to be sent as emissary

Veerappan wants Tamil activist Kolathur Mani to be sent to him as an emissary within eight days to negotiate the release of Janata Dal-United leader H Nagappa, who is in the forest brigand's captivity for the last 44 days.

Karnataka Home Minister Mallikarjun Kharge, after listening to the third cassette sent by the brigand, said the 'next move' would be decided after consulting Chief Minister S M Krishna, who is on a 'padayatra' on the Cauvery issue.

The cassette was found in the lawns of Nagappa's farmhouse at Kamagere in Chamarajanagar district on Sunday evening. Nagappa's son Preetam handed it over to Kharge.

Mani is lodged in Bellary jail in Karnataka on charges of helping the forest brigand acquire arms and ammunition.

In the second cassette, Veerappan had demanded that either Mani or Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P Nedumaran be sent as emissaries, which was promptly rejected by the Karnataka government saying it could not send anyone lodged in the jail.

Nedumaran is in a Tamil Nadu prison, after being arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act for allegedly making pro-Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam speech.

Both had played an important role in securing the release of Kannada thespian Rajakumar from the clutches of Veerappan after a 108-day abduction saga.
