Rajnikanth steps in to cool tempers on Cauvery

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Movie superstar Rajnikanth on Friday asked the Tamil film world to 'reconsider' its decision to launch a protest rally in the lignite town of Neyveli to demand the stoppage of power supply to neighbouring Karnataka in retaliation for the latter's decision to withhold the Cauvery waters.

He said the film fraternity should make efforts to resolve the issue, not exacerbate a problem whose solution has so far eluded the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, the Cauvery River Authority, and even the Supreme Court.

Rajnikanth pointed out, "It is not possible to meet all the water requirements of Tamil Nadu even if Karnataka implements the Supreme Court order."

The actor is planning to call on Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to press the case for a Ganga-Cauvery link, and called for the support of all political parties in this matter.
