Former foreign secretary J N Dixit joins Congress

Former foreign secretary J N Dixit on Friday joined the Congress party saying Gujarat was one of the factors that led to his decision.

Senior Congress leader and chairman of the AICC's foreign affairs department K Natwar Singh announced the decision at the party headquarters in Dixit's presence.

The recent developments in Gujarat and accusations that intellectuals were mere armchair critics led him to adopt this course, Dixit said explaining his decision to join active politics eight years after his retirement from the Indian Foreign Service.

He recalled that his parents were members of the Congress party between 1921 and 1946 but resigned when the nation got its freedom in August 1947.
