Modi's utterances responsible
for temple attack: Vaghela

Gujarat Congress unit president Shankersinh Vaghela on Wednesday said Chief Minister Narendra Modi's controversial utterances were responsible for the terrorist attack on the Akshardham temple and charged the BJP government with plunging the state into an unprecedented communal mess.

"The message found with the two slain militants made it clear that it was a reaction to the nonsense you (Modi) keep uttering," Vaghela told an impressive crowd gathered in Ahmedabad under the aegis of the Panchayat Parishad.

"Religion would have no meaning if the common people's survival was in question. Stop talking about religion, we are more interested in our survival," he said.

In sharp contrast to the rhetoric from Modi and other BJP leaders about religion, Vaghela largely confined his speech to developmental aspects and repeatedly stressed that "survival is more important (than religion)".

The former chief minister went to the extent of stating that the communal killings could be compared to the "acts of a monster".
