An eight-member Cauvery Monitoring Committee team led by Union Water Resources Secretary A K Goswami arrived in Chennai on Tuesday for inspecting the Mettur dam near Salem and other areas.
The team, during its two-day stay in Tamil Nadu, would assess the water and crop position in the delta areas and in Mettur.
Goswami told reporters at Chennai airport that the team, which includes senior officials of Karnataka, Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu, was in compliance with the directives of the Supreme Court.
He said the team would visit Mettur dam and then proceed to Thanjavur where they would interact with farmers and others and would return to Chennai on Wednesday for discussions with state government officials.
Asked if the time was sufficient for the team to make its full-fledged assessment, he said the team would be utilising the time available on Tuesday and Wednesday, which was enough.
The team along with some Tamil Nadu government officials left for Mettur by three helicopters.
