Tension in Madurai as suspected terrorists are buried

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Tension prevailed in Madurai as the bodies of suspected terrorist Imam Ali and four others, brought from Bangalore by their families, were buried in the Sungam mosque.

Police, not wanting to take any chances, had made adequate security arrangements in the city and near the mosque.

Protestors had put up black flags in some areas. Family members and curious onlookers gathered at the mosque as the five bodies were buried after the usual rites.

Imam Ali, Mohammed Ibrahim, Basheer, Seeniyappa and his wife Yasmin, were killed in an encounter with Tamil Nadu special commandos on Sunday in Bangalore.

Imam Ali, a fundamentalist whom police accuse of masterminding the bomb blasts at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh head office in Madras in 1993, had been on the run after escaping from the Madurai prison in March 2002.
