India, Russia to sign Delhi Declaration
during Vladimir Putin's visit

Giving a new thrust to their strategic partnership, India and Russia will sign a path-breaking Delhi Declaration during President Vladimir Putin's three-day state visit from December three.

The declaration, to be signed by President Putin and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, would stress on cooperation in combating terrorism besides covering a wide gamut of security and political issues, official sources said.

Another key document to be signed by the two leaders is expected to set out directions for a close partnership in economic, scientific and technological fields.

Soon after his arrival from China on Tuesday evening, Putin will meet the prime minister and later join him for a private dinner.

On Wednesday, after a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Putin will meet the prime minister and later participate in delegation-level talks covering the entire gamut of bilateral relations besides regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Later, he will call on President A P J Abdul Kalam and Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. This will be followed by meetings with Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha and Defence Minister George Fernandes.

The Russian leader will also meet Leader of the Opposition and Congress president Sonia Gandhi and interact with members of the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

In the evening, President Kalam will host a state banquet for Putin who is to leave for Moscow on Thursday morning.
