Attack on Raghunath temple; 10 killed

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Ten people were killed and 53 injured when a militant attacked the historic Raghunath temple in Jammu on Sunday evening.

The militant hurled grenades and fired indiscriminately on the heavily guarded temple complex in Raghunath chowk, police sources said.

Security forces later shot dead the lone militant.

Police sources said the dead included a police official, a paramilitary soldier and the militant.

The injured are undergoing treatment at the SMGS hospital in Jammu.

This is the second time this year that the temple has been attacked. In March, at least ten people, including four security personnel and two militants, were killed.

Even as the Raghunath temple was under attack, two militants targeted the nearby Shiv temple. Security forces were exchanging gunfire with the militants when reports last came in.

As the news of the attacks spread, hundreds of people shouting anti-government slogans held a demonstration on the Residency Road.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Meanwhile, an indefinite curfew was imposed in Jammu city as a precautionary measure with the police and paramilitary forces deployed in strength.

The decision to impose curfew in the city was taken after a high-level meeting, which was attended by top police and civil officials.
