Supreme Court defers hearing on contempt case against Karnataka

Noting the withdrawal of insinuations by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa against the prime minister and the CRA, a bench comprising Chief Justice G B Pattanaik, Justice Y K Sabharwal and Justice Arijit Pasayat said, "We hope and trust that a final decision will be taken by the CRA in its meeting."

The bench was told that while the Cauvery Monitoring Committee, which oversees implementation of the tribunal's order, will meet on November 25, the CRA meeting will be held on November 29.

Tamil Nadu had filed two contempt petitions against Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna and his water resources minister and others alleging that they had 'wilfully' violated the Supreme Court order.

Karnataka, however, abandoning its defiant stand had started releasing water and claimed in an affidavit that it had released 'excess water' to its neighbour.
