The assassins shot at the driver through the tinted glasses of Gupta's Mercedes car in what police termed as a case of 'mistaken identity', Nezavisimaya Gazeta reported on Thursday.

Gupta runs a business that included production of fruit juices, vodka, tea packaging and trading.

Since 1996, Gupta's Singapore-based Amtel Group, which has set up a large production and distribution network, is said to have taken control of Russia's tyre industry after it acquired stakes in almost all of the plants producing soot, a key component in automobile tyre production.

According to the Gazeta, so far Amtel Group has had a clean record and was not found involved any of the usual scandals, though there can be no doubt that such a successful company would certainly have rivals.

Amtel was the first company owned by an NRI to establish its brand in the Russian market associated with high quality products.

So far, Amtel officials have not made any comment on the incident.
