India wants greater scientific ties with EU: Joshi

"Strengthening the scientific and technological collaboration between India and European Union would be greatly beneficial not only to these nations but the entire world," Human Resources Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi said at the European Policy Centre on Tuesday night.

Unchecked ever-increasing exploitation of the limited resources on the planet and the resultant climate change pose a danger to the very existence of mankind, Joshi said.

Appreciating the increasing awareness about these issues in Europe the minister said, "India and the EC nations can join hands to tackle these problems."

In view of the availability of infrastructure and expertise, a 'centre for excellence in climate control' will soon be established in India, Joshi said, adding that the decision was taken also because any study on climate control would have to begin from the Indian Ocean. This ocean has great influence on atmospheric changes.

Joshi sought both financial and technological support with networking backup of the European Community for the centre.

Stating that India had achieved self-sufficiency and excellence in some selected areas of science and technology, Joshi felt the country was making all efforts to encourage international collaboration.
