No plan to offer ceasefire
in J&K: Fernandes

Defence Minister George Fernandes on Saturday said there was no move to offer a Ramzan ceasefire to terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, soon after taking over the reins of the state, had suggested that Centre declare a unilateral ceasefire in the Valley.

Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Fernandes said the government was deeply concerned over the presence of Al Qaeda terrorists in neighbouring Bangladesh and the Union home ministry was taking adequate steps to deal with any eventuality.

He said while India has no worries as far as its border with China was concerned, the security on the country's borders with Bangladesh and Bhutan would have to be strengthened to prevent infiltration of terrorists.

"The porosity needs to be taken care of where the border is unfenced...it is only a matter of time before we do this," he said.
