Delhi shootout witness alleges police intimidation

Hari Krishna, who claimed that the Ansal Plaza encounter was 'stage-managed', on Saturday, alleged that the Delhi Police was "intimidating" him to "keep my mouth shut", a charge denied by the police.

Surfacing at his south Delhi residence after remaining unreachable for several days, Krishna addressed a press conference to reiterate his claim that police had shot dead two unarmed men in the basement of the shopping mall on Sunday and he had witnessed it.

"Police is intimidating me. They are unnecessarily detaining my patients and spreading false stories about my background," he alleged.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Ashok Chand dismissed the allegations. "These are all false and baseless," Chand told reporters.

As the press conference was in progress, a Delhi police constable served a summons on Krishna asking him to report to the police station for questioning, citing newspaper reports quoting him as an eyewitness in the shootout.

He said he will depose only before National Human Rights Commission or a court and refused to the police station.

On the encounter, Krishna claimed he was only a few meters away when policemen in civil dress fired at two "sedate-looking unarmed persons".

"It happened within minutes," he said, but failed to specify the exact time of the incident even while claiming that he was in Ansal Plaza between 1800 IST and midnight.

Claiming that he initially thought it to be a gang-war and left the place, he said subsequently he heard the shootout was an encounter between police and terrorists. "But there was firing from only one side and this cannot be termed as an encounter."
