Reporting AIDS/HIV cases mandatory in Bihar

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

The Bihar government has made the reporting of AIDS/HIV [Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome/Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus] cases mandatory.

"Even private clinics and pathological laboratories will have to report the detection of all cases to the concerned authorities," Health Commissioner Ashok Kumar Choudhary said.

The identity of the patients will be kept a secret, Bihar AIDS Control Society said. "Only the top officials of the heath department and the BACS would know about it," sources said.

Bihar has become the first state in the country to declare AIDS/HIV as a notifiable disease.

Last month about hundred HIV cases were detected at the Darbhanga Medical College Hospital, increasing the total number of the cases in the state to 1,700.

The official figure, though, has remained pegged at 133 in the state till date, BACS project director C K Anil said.
