G B Pattanaik sworn in Chief Justice of India

Justice Gopal Ballav Pattanaik was on Friday sworn in as the Chief Justice of India, succeeding Justice B N Kirpal, who has retired.

President A P J Abdul Kalam administered the oath of office to him at an impressive ceremony in the Ashoka Hall in Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Justice Pattanaik will have a short tenure of 45 days and is the 32nd CJI.

Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, Law Minister Jana Krishnamurthy, his deputy Ravishakar Prasad and other Cabinet ministers also attended the ceremony.

Solicitor General Kirit Rawal, high court judges, former CJI's, and other leading advocates also attended the brief ceremony.

Justice Pattanaik started his career in law on February 28, 1962 when he enrolled as an advocate and practiced civil, criminal and company cases in the Orissa high court.

He was appointed a Judge of the Orissa high court on June 1, 1983 and became the Chief Justice of the Patna high court on May 19, 1995.

He was promoted to the Supreme Court on September 11, 1995 and is due to retire on December 19, 2002.
