Kolkata street to be renamed after Mother Teresa

M Chhaya in Kolkata

The upscale Park Street in Kolkata will be renamed as Mother Teresa Sarani to 'honour the person who made Kolkata her home and worked among the poorest of the poor,' Kolkata Mayor Subrata Mukherjee said.

Former United States president Bill Clinton may be invited to inaugurate it, as he would be in town in December, he said. "We want him to do the honours, as he has been associated with Mother Teresa's efforts."

The mayor has been leading a campaign to rename the street after Mother Teresa.

But a lot of Kolkatans, including a sizeable chunk of Christians, however, have criticised Mukherjee's efforts.

They say that Park Street, with its bars, should not be associated with a noble soul.
