Jaguar crash was unusual: IAF

The Indian Air Force has described Tuesday's crash of the Jaguar fighter near Ambala as an "unusual one".

The aircraft had rolled out only in 1997 from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and had not even gone for its first overhaul, IAF officials said in New Delhi on Friday.

Fairly experienced pilots were in the jet, the officials said, adding the Jaguar's systems refused to respond just seconds after takeoff.

They said the recovered flight data recorder of the Jaguar, which had reported some jamming of spools, had been sent to Bangalore for tests.

While asserting that the crash will be probed thoroughly, the officials said that the IAF had announced a rehabilitation programme for people who were killed and those who lost their property.

The officials said cheques of Rs 40,000 had been handed as immediate relief to the next of kin of those killed; Rs 20,000 for every child killed and Rs 50,000 to those whose houses had been destroyed.

Amounts ranging from Rs 4,000 to Rs 8,000 had been given to those injured, they said.

Meanwhile, a 19-year old girl died in Ambala on Friday, taking the toll to 10.

Santosh, daughter of one Nanu, succumbed to injuries in the Military Hospital. She had sustained about 70 per cent burns, an official spokesman said.

The Deputy Commissioner of Ambala, D D Gautama, said relief of Rs 100,000 to each of the families of those killed will be given on Saturday.
