Jaya denies giving any assurance to Nagappa's family

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday said she did not give any assurance to abducted former Karnataka minister H Nagappa's family about sending jailed Tamil nationalist leader Kolathur Mani as an emissary to forest brigand Veerappan.

Nagappa was abducted by Veerappan on August 25 from his native Kamagere village in Kollegal block of Chamarajanagar district.

In a brief statement released by her office, Jayalalithaa said no such request was made by Nagappa's wife at their meeting on Wednesday in Chennai.

The chief minister said her government would take legal action against the newspapers which had published reports to this effect.

On Karnataka's request to suspend special operations against Veerappan, Jayalalithaa said Tamil Nadu had withdrawn its special task force from the joint combing operations against Veerappan on Karnataka soil a month back. However, STF operations continue in Tamil Nadu forests, she said.

Nagappa has been in Veerappan's captivity for over 75 days now.
