Nagappa abduction: JD-U
upset with Karnataka govt

Sadananda R in Chamarajanagar

Top leaders of the Karnataka unit of Janata Dal (united) on Wednesday criticised the state government for its refusal to send Agriculture Processing Minister Raju Gowda as its emissary to negotiate the release of former minister H Nagappa from forest brigand Veerappan's captivity.

Veerappan in his last message had asked the government to send Gowda to negotiate Nagappa's release after the government expressed its inability to send Tamil nationalist leader Kolathur Mani, the forest brigand's first choice.

Mani, currently lodged at the Bellary central jail, has several cases pending against him and is unlikely to get bail in all of them anytime soon.

Mahadeva Prasad, the sitting MLA from Chamarajanagar, said he was disappointed with the state cabinet's decision. He said he would willingly go to the jungles if the brigand sought his services to negotiate Nagappa's release.

The official emissary of Karnataka government and Janata Dal's Kollegal block president Ponnachi Mahadevaswamy too had asked Gowda to accompany him to the brigand's hideout.

Gowda, however, has maintained that the message purportedly received from Veerappan is not genuine.

The government, however, denies this.
