Armymen rescue four American rafters

Josy Joseph in New Delhi

Indian Army rescued four Americans rafters, including three US embassy officials, at Shivpuri near Dehradun on November 4, senior officers told rediff.com.

The Americans were rafting in the Ganga river when their raft flipped over, throwing all four into the icy cold, turbulent river.

As the Americans were being swept away, Havaldar Raghu P rafting in an army boat, with his colleagues, spotted them and jumped into the river to save the four. "He jumped without caring for his personal safety," an army spokesman said.

Raghu managed pulled out one American, William Puyatt, out of the water. Meanwhile, other army rafters led by Major Sharif Mizanur Rehman and Captain Vishal Ahlawat rescued the other three. The rescued Americans were identified as Matt Lowe, Geoffrey, William and Eden White.

"This swift action by armymen with utter disregard to their personal safety saved four precious lives," the spokesman said. He said the rescued persons expressed 'overwhelming gratitude' to the armymen for saving their lives. "They have sent a letter of appreciation to the director, Army Adventure Wing," he added.
