Curfew lifted in Mandya

Sadananda R in Chamarajanagar.

Curfew in Mandya district, Karnataka, which was imposed on October 30 following increased agitation by farmers over the release of Cauvery waters, was lifted on Saturday.

But prohibitory orders imposed under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code [prohibiting the assembly of more than five persons] will remain in place till November 6.

The Cauvery River Protection Committee, which met in Mandya, decided to restart its agitation on November 4 and continue it till November 15. They are protesting against the Supreme Court's October 24 order directing Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu.

The meeting, chaired by farmers' leader Puttannaiah, alleged that Chief Minister S M Krishna had betrayed the farmers by releasing water and demanded his resignation.

It also called for the release of committee chairman G Made Gowda and other farmers, and all cases against them to be withdrawn. Gowda was remanded to judicial custody on October 31.

It was also decided to call for the resignation of all elected representatives from the district and protest in front of the chief minister's residence in Bangalore next week.

Meanwhile, four legislators from the opposition announced that they would resign in protest against the Supreme Court order.

Janata Dal leaders on Saturday organised protest marches and dharnas in all district headquarters in the state.

Road and rail traffic between Bangalore and Mysore remained closed on Saturday. Educational institutions will remain closed for a few more days.
