A petition has been filed in a Sivakasi court in Tamil Nadu against Kanchi Kamakoti Shankaracharya alleging that the seer demeaned the Dalit community in his invitation for Thursday's rally in Chennai to defend the state government's ordinance [Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Forcible Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2002] banning forcible conversions.
The petition has been filed by Sathyamurthy, an activist of the pro-Dalit Puthiya Thamizhagam Party.
The petitioner quoted the Shankaracharya as saying that the Dalit Christians have been returning to Hinduism for the purpose of seeking job-reservations, but at the same time enjoying the fruits of education available in Christian-run institutions.
Acting on this, Judicial Magistrate Abraham Lincoln asked the police to investigate the complaint and report to the court.
