No embargo on sale of Hawk to India: Britain

The British government on Sunday denied reports that it was planning an embargo on the sale of one billion pounds worth of Advanced Jet Trainers to India in view of the escalating tension between New Delhi and Islamabad.

When contacted, a spokesman of the Department of Trade and Industry, in charge of arms exports, said, "At present there is no plan for an arms embargo. We are keeping a close watch on developments in the region."

A leading British daily, The Independent, had reported that Britain had put on hold the sale of 60 Hawk jets as part of a ban on all arms export licences to India and Pakistan.

According to the report, the "ban affecting India and Pakistan was signed by the Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt on Thursday".
